![]() ![]() While this is an appreciated feature, I was disappointed that the interface wasn't easier to understand. You can then control the game with the physical controls you've assigned. Just drag the appropriate icons (stick controls, or buttons, gestures) to the screen and assign a button or stick to each control. When in a game with touch, simply hold down the play button and a menu will appear at the top. ![]() The Gamepad Mapper interface isn't the most intuitive around, to say the least. ![]() It's not necessarily for tilt-based games like Real Racing 3, but more for games that already include touch controls like Temple Run or NBA Jam. Game pad mapping is a much-appreciated features that allows even more games to be used with the Shield's physical controls. Nvidia says the number of Android games with native controller support has increased to 140 from less than 100 last time I checked. The latest OTA update for the Shield, released on October 28, brings a few major changes. However, until you can actually use this feature anywhere - something Nvidia says its working on - like a hotel while traveling or even a plane, its appeal will be limited. It's a novel feature that most will probably have to experience the convenience of to truly appreciate. If your couch, bedroom, washroom, backyard, front yard, or roof are close enough, it's a nice way to play full versions of your favorite games, using your latest save file, without having to sit at your desk. I had a difficult time coming up with a good answer, but what really appeals to me is its inherent convenience. Not all the games listed here are compatible, however. However, when within about 10 feet of my router with no signal obstructions, I had no problems with lag or video artifacting. Your ability to play smoothly is greatly affected by the strength of your signal and how many walls (including what said walls are made of) are between your Shield and the router. The aforementioned 25-foot limit for streaming is significantly diminished depending on your home/office layout. At 2.4GHz I got frequent drops when only several unobstructed feet away. Also, although Nvidia recommends using your router's 5GHz wireless band, my experience during my first week of testing gave me the impression that 5GHz was more of a requirement than a recommendation. Sometimes games just don't work and you're left with only a black screen, or as in many cases, the PC game requires setup that can only be done from the PC. Otherwise your controller will still be operating the Shield – as I found when I went upstairs to investigate, and discovered it playing Netflix to an empty room. You'll want to make sure both the Shield and the PC you're streaming from are on the same network before attempting to connect. However, if you still find it’s not working, then you’ve probably missed off an important step: you need to go into the Shield TV options and ‘forget this device’. Take a micro-USB cable, plug one end into your PC and the other end into the controller and it should be immediately detected, as it was for me. If you meet the criteria above, it should just work. ![]() How to use the Nvidia Shield controller with a PC An enterprising developer has made a workaround to this, but it only seems to work with the 2016 controller for now. That’s free to download, but you need to have a GeForce graphics processor for it to function, so your laptop may well be out of contention. Hardly a deal-breaker, but better forewarned anyway.įinally, you need the GeForce Experience software installed. Secondly, while all the buttons including the trackpad are supported, the headphone jack and microphone won’t work. It’s not a Bluetooth controller, y’see, as Nvidia has instead opted to use Wi-Fi Direct. Yes, it works wirelessly with the Shield, but Nvidia is quite clear: it won’t work with your PC, no matter how much you cross your fingers and wish. Using the Nvidia Shield controller with a PC – what’s missing?įirst of all, if you use the Shield Controller on PC, it’s wired only. But will the gamepad work with your PC? Depending on your setup, probably – though there are some drawbacks. As a result, the Nvidia Shield controller doesn’t really get a whole lot of use. Not only does it include far more power than you typically get in no-brand hardware, it runs as a Plex server – so you can stream your media around the house and around the world. Despite selling itself as a games machine, Nvidia’s Shield TV is the best Android TV box around. ![]()
